Eco Levy in Kenya: How It’s Driving Up the Cost of Living
Picture this: You’re shopping in Nairobi for a new phone, sanitary pads for your daughter, and tires for your boda boda. Suddenly, everything costs more. Why? One word: Eco Levy.
As of 2024, Kenya introduced an Eco Levy on certain imported products considered harmful to the environment—phones, sanitary towels, tires, and more. While its goal is environmental protection, the public is feeling the pinch.
🧾 What Is the Eco Levy?
This tax applies to imported goods deemed non-biodegradable or environmentally sensitive:
- Phones, laptops, electronics
- Sanitary pads, diapers
- Tires, batteries
- Plastic packaging
Intended as a “polluter pays” model, the cost is passed down to the end consumer—you.
💰 But Here’s the Problem…
Wanjiku’s Dilemma: A pack of sanitary pads now costs KES 120, up from 80. That’s a 50% rise.
Otieno’s Hustle: Boda riders pay more for tires, hurting their daily income.
Amina’s Frustration: Imported phones cost more, delaying her upgrade.
📊 Impact on the Cost of Living
- Higher product prices for everyday goods
- Disproportionate effect on women and low-income earners
- No subsidy or relief provided by the government
🌍 What Other Countries Do
- South Africa exempts essentials from similar levies
- Europe reinvests the funds into waste systems
- Kenya offers no plan, no clarity, no feedback loop
🤔 Is It Really About the Environment?
- No working e-waste or plastic recycling system
- Funds not transparently earmarked for environmental use
- Tax felt more like a fiscal band-aid than a green policy
✅ Way Forward
- Review Levy Scope: Remove essentials like sanitary pads and diapers
- Enforce Accountability: Show where levy funds are going
- Subsidize Alternatives: Support local green manufacturing
- Engage Citizens: Public involvement in future policy
